De-Frizzing a Synthetic Wig

The popularity of hair replacement systems has grown over the past couple of decades, matching and surpassing their popularity in the 60s and 70s. Synthetic wigs are often chosen by wearers because of their versatility, range of colors and economical price.

Synthetic hair can become tangled and frizzy after many times of use and these types of wigs cannot be treated the way we treat our own natural locks. Here are a few ways you can keep your favorite synthetic wigs looking glossy and glamorous:

A handheld steamer will remove the mid-week frizziness from your hair piece. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on the steamer, one that works sufficiently well for a moderate price will do. Using a wide tooth comb along with the steamer, section the wig and begin blowing the steamer on that section of the wig, using the comb to pull the steam through.

To totally remove the frizziness and bring life back to your wig, you may have to steam and comb a section a couple of times. There is no need to worry about it getting damp. Remember that one of the pros of choosing a synthetic wig is that it has a memory. This means that the dampness won’t destroy the original shape and style of your hair replacement option. Once you steam it and comb it, it will fall into its original shape.

If you have the time to wash your wig, the washing and conditioning process will bring your synthetic hair piece back to life. Begin by filling a sink or basin with cool water and a gentle shampoo. Place your wig in the water and swirl it around a bit. After approximately three to four minutes, remove your hair replacement piece and rinse under cool, clean water.

Fill the sink or basin again with cool water and a gentle hair conditioner. Allow the wig to soak in the conditioner for another three to four minutes, then rinse again. Pat dry with a towel and let the wig sit on a clothing rack or anything that will allow air to circulate around the hair as it dries.

Flat Iron

Many synthetic wig styles include layers. The best way to keep your layers from sticking out in all directions is to section them off with a comb, then use a hot iron on the lowest setting to straighten each section of wig hair.
