Three Types of Alopecia that Cause Hair Loss

Alopecia is an autoimmune skin disease which affects millions of people and causes hair loss, which can be resolved with treatment. It affects both men and women, with cases occurring more frequently in men, and these cases can either be permanent or short-lived.

There are several different medical conditions of Alopecia, but here we will discuss the three common types that we treat with our hair loss products.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata is characterized by patchy hair loss. Patients with patchy hair loss are not completely bald, but can experience hair loss on different parts of the body, such as on the scalp, eye lashes, eye brows, and legs. The most common occurrence is usually found on the scalp. This type of hair loss is often linked to other medical conditions, such as vitiligo, thyroid disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Alopecia Universalis

Alopecia Universalis, like its name implies, is a disease in which little to no hair is growing anywhere on the body. This includes the arms, legs, head, and even eye lashes. According to medical diagnoses, people born with this form of Alopecia lose most of their hair early on. This leaves important body cavities unprotected, particularly the nose and eyes. People with this condition are especially susceptible to sun damage and bacteria if caution is not taken.

Alopecia Totalis

Alopecia Totalis refers to the rare hair loss found strictly on the scalp. This kind of hair loss is often accompanied with no visible symptoms. Alopecia Totalis often begins showing patchy visible signs, and soon evolves into total hair loss on the scalp. People with Alopecia Totalis also often report brittleness in the nails and toenails, as this condition also targets these areas of the body.
